Last year, hundreds of volunteers donated countless hours of their time to the Munster History Museum, the Woodland Restoration at Heritage Park, 4th of July Float, Holiday Open House, Annual Dinner, and many other projects, activities and events. Many volunteers came from churches, civic groups, and corporations. These volunteers simply felt a strong calling to help in any way they could. Hundreds of local residents and organizations donated money, food, or life skills expertise (and in many cases, all three!) to help the Munster Historical Society accoumplish our preservation efforts, museum services and community educational outreach.
How do I volunteer? Signing up to volunteer is easy. To participate, just submit your interests and contact information by emailing volunteer@munsterhistory.org. Our volunteer coordinator will answer your email and, if you would like, will contact you to discuss your interests, the details of your participation, and the hours you are available.
Where can I find more information on the events you sponsor? Go to the Munster Historical Society's Event Calendar and/or Event Flyer to find upcoming activities. When available, you can also view our Newsletter which keeps you informed of all the events our organization is sponsoring. Additionally, click on About Us and view our MHS Brochure for more information.
Heritage Park Volunteer Day
Last spring, numerous volunteers from the local community volunteered to plant oak saplings, clean up litter, mulch, and work in the museum gardens at Heritage Park. This year volunteers are needed more than ever to help clean up after last year's tornado damage. If you can, bring a rake, shovel, wheelbarrow, gloves...or just come wearing your work clothes. Yard bags and water will be provided. Email volunteer@munsterhistory.org to receive info and volunteer dates & times. We hope to see you at Heritage Park!
Types of Volunteer Positions:
Museum Docent/School Tour Guide
Heritage Park Woodland Trail Guide
Woodland Restoration/Museum Garden Volunteers
Special Projects, etc.
Hours to Volunteer First & Third Saturday of every month 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and during special event or by appointment group/school tours.
If you would like to volunteer but aren't available during these hours, contact us anyway. We often need Museum Docents and Tour Guides for special events or group/school tours. If you are hesitant to volunteer because you think you may not be able to answer questions, please don't worry...none of us know everything! Also, we have a Docent Manual for reference. If you don't know the answer, just say, "I will try to find out for you." We always have at least two docents at the museum.
You must be 18 or older to volunteer at the Munster History Museum. However, you can volunteer as a Junior Docent if you are a member of the Munster Jr. Historical Society.
