Flickering Lamp Blog
"History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes,
to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days."

Celebrate a Century - Kaske House Turns 100 in 2010!
By Time Traveler | June 22, 2009 at 08:38 PM EDT | 1 comment

Plans are being made for the "Celebrate a Century" party honoring the 100th birthday of the historic 1910 Kaske House located at Heritage Park on the corner of Columbia Avenue and Ridge Road in Munster, Indiana.  If you would like to serve on this committee, make a donation, or belong to a business or organization that would like to participate or sponsor this event, please contact volunteer@munsterhistory.org.

A turn-of-the-century themed one or two-day weekend event at Heritage Park could feature old-fashioned games, food vendors, and craft demonstrations.  We would like to have a blab school, box social, storytelling, vintage cars, banjo players, barbershop quartet, and bluegrass band.  We would like to offer prizes and sell candy, balloons, t-shirts, cookbooks, baked goods, etc.

This event will be a combination celebration and fundraiser for the Kaske House facelift planned for a very special home that has served our community for a century.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and honored as a town landmark in 2007, the Kaske House is maintained by Munster Parks and managed by the Munster Historical Society.  It has served as a popular and charming house museum since 1997 and is now called the Munster History Museum.

The Munster Historical Society is committed to the well-informed discussion of history-related issues in a timely, professional, and respectful manner.

What is a history blog? Perhaps the best comparison is an old-fashioned diary, similar to the handwritten journal that Meriwether Lewis kept to record the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 1800s.  Like Lewis, we want to remember the details of events, people we meet along the way, beautiful scenery, landmarks, inventions, our accomplishments, struggles, aspirations, etc.

Reading a blog gives us the opportunity to look over the shoulder of another historian.  Studying what happened in another era enables us to better understand ourselves and our world.  Hopefully, the well-marked trails of the past will keep us from stumbling into the future.

Sharing facts, thoughts, and ideas in a history blog offers the opportunity to learn, to research, to seek truth, and to unearth long buried secrets.  We hope you enjoy your journey and that we all become “enlightened” along the trail of the Flickering Lamp Blog.
